The extraction
There are two ways to extract diamonds, which depends from the place where they are found.
The first method is to extract lots of earth, filtering and washing brings out the rough diamonds.
Otherwise the much easier way is through natural erosion, where the stones are found in rivers and sand beaches.
The research of diamonds can be made industrially or manually.
Diamonds are rare: you need to move 250 tons of material to find 1 carat (1 carat equals 1/5 grams). The world production is annually about 100 millions of carats, where 50% are used for jewellery. Just 1% has the properties for an investment diamond.
